Austin Philanthropist Robert L. Moody Dead at 88

"We are incredibly thankful that the Moody Foundation, under Robert Moody's leadership, chose to invest in our college, transforming the experiences of our students, faculty and staff in remarkable ways," says the dean of the Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin after the death of the billionaire philanthropist.

Moody, who served as chairman of the foundation's board, donated more than $200 million to Texas organizations, including $50 million in 2013 to create the Moody College of Communication, reports the Austin American-Statesman.

The Moody Center, the university's new basketball arena and events venue, opened in 2022 after a $130 million grant from the foundation.

Moody, a native of Oklahoma who moved to Austin in the 1950s, founded a number of businesses, including City National Bank and Moody's Insurance.

"My father was an avid learner, always reading the news or meeting with experts in various fields to expand his horizons," says Moody's son, Ross, who has served as a trustee of the Moody Foundation since 1986.

William Lewis Moody Jr., Robert's grandfather, studied law at the University of Texas and acquired the Galveston Daily News, the oldest newspaper in Texas.
