"From talent development to path breaking research to entrepreneurship and beyond, institutions have a central role to play in economic development," says the president of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, which has just bestowed its coveted Innovation and Economic Prosperity University designation on New York's Stony Brook University.
"We're pleased to recognize Stony Brook University for its commitment to engaging its community around these issues to advance regional economic development."
The APLU's Commission on Economic and Community Engagement pored over the university's application to determine its economic engagement activities, which include promoting business and industry, talent and workforce development, and innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as "sustaining and enhancing Long Island and our state as vibrant and exciting communities," says APLU President Mark Becker.
Stony Brook is one of more than 80 universities across the US and Canada to receive the designation, which the APLU describes as "a national leader in efforts to help public research universities plan, assess, and communicate their work in regional, national, and global economic development and community engagement."
The university was also recently named the anchor institution of the New York Climate Exchange, and Gov.
Kathy Hochul recently named Stony Brook a flagship university in the State University of New York, reports the New York
