Aurora Arts and Languages among the Focus of $6 Million Statewide Afghan Refugee Grants

The Rose Community Foundation has awarded $6 million in grants to Colorado nonprofits to help Afghan refugees settle in the state, the Denver Post reports.

The money came from the federal government and was distributed to the Colorado Department of Human Services, which chose to partner with the foundation to distribute it to other organizations.

Sarah Kurz, vice president of public affairs for the foundation, tells the Aurora Sentinel that smaller nonprofits that might not have been able to put together an application for a federal grant were able to do so.

"We wanted to reach organizations that may not be typical recipients of federal dollars," Kurz says.

In total, the foundation awarded $6 million in grants to organizations across the state that provide support to Afghan refugees in three separate categories: legal services, mental health needs, and support in schools.

The money came from the federal government and was sent to the Colorado Department of Human Services, which chose to partner with Rose to distribute it to other organizations, Kurz says.

Since Aurora has such a large refugee population, Kurz says many of its residents will be served by the organizations with Denver addresses.

The grants cover 18 months, with the funding expected to run through October of 2024.
