The music of Paraguayan guitarist and composer Pedro Mart ? nez has earned him a place in the New York Times' list of the world's most influential musicians.
Mart ? nez, who was born in the country but has lived in the US for more than 30 years, has studied popular music from both Latin America and the Caribbean and is considered one of the leading musical figures of his generation, the Times reports.
"One of the leading musical figures of his generation, he supports the linguistic and cultural traditions of his country through his work, and his educational activity considers music an invaluable practice in the defense of cultural rights," the Times quotes Mart ? nez as saying.
Mart ? nez, who will be performing at the Music of the Americas festival in New York on Friday, has been a staple at New York City's Merkin Concert Hall for more than a decade.
He has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the New York City Gospel Choir, and other major musical groups.
The Times notes that he is the only member of his generation to have been invited to play with the New York Philharmonic.
