Amarillo Area Foundation Awards Childcare-Related Grants to Claude, Friona

"We could create an extended workforce for the city, but we could also create a safe environment for people to leave their children," Lee Davila, manager of the city of Friona, Texas, tells KAMR.

That's why he's excited about a new daycare that's set to open in the city's former Girl Scout building.

The Amarillo Globe-News reports the city applied for a grant from the Amarillo Area Foundation to open a daycare in the building, which was donated by the Girl Scouts.

"We started having discussions with local business owners and residents and trying to figure out what buildings would serve as a perfect conduit for daycare services, in doing so we had a conversation with a local Girl Scout troop who was looking to offer their building up as a potential daycare site," Davila tells KAMR.

The nonprofit Happy Tribe Academy will offer full-day care for up to five kids from birth to 5 years old and will also offer after-school care.

The building will be named in honor of Louisa Wilson, a Girl Scout leader in the community who died in 2014.
