Larry Johnson is a man of few words, but that doesn't mean he doesn't make a difference.
The executive director of the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln in Springfield, Ill., is this year's recipient of the Stephens Philanthropy Award for his "relentless approach to creating enthusiasm for philanthropy in this community," writes the foundation's board in an op-ed in the State Journal-Register.
"When you think of a 'behind the scenes' force in this community, you think of Larry Johnson," the board writes.
"He is a visionary who connects people with causes he instinctively knows they will care about and then convinces them to commit their time and resources.
Larry has an uncanny ability to recognize a need and immediately know who could help."
Johnson first became involved with the foundation when he and his family were invited to volunteer at the 2008 Fat Ass 5K and Street Party for Charity, which has since grown into a family tradition.
"He not only helped energize people, but he also made the case for us to hire a forward-thinking executive director, which brought John Stremsterfer to the table," the board writes. "Larry preaches the value of a fine-tuned purpose for nonprofits."
