Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr announced a new program that allows young suspects to avoid prosecution in certain cases. Reset Jefferson County is a diversionary program that helps young people who are being held for low-level, first-time felonies.
This program is a collaboration with the Alabama Appleseed Center for Law and Justice. Carr stated that the initiative was modeled after the Center for Court Innovation in New York.
The Jefferson County program is funded by a grant from the Instruments of Hope Unity Fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. Participants in the Jefferson County program will avoid a criminal record and the court process entirely by completing community-based program requirements.
