Hicks quotes Sarah Harrison, the vice president of philanthropic services at The Denver Foundation, who says that philanthropy literally means "love of humankind."

Engaging in philanthropy, including making charitable gifts, is an expression of love. Investing time, expertise, and financial resources in a cause or program that helps someone or something creates a connection to the world, and to the community, Harrison adds.

Hicks also provides steps to take to ensure a donation is being optimized: 1) Ask the right questions; 2) Identify your values; and 3) Create or give to a field-of-interest fund.
