The Dallas Community Foundation awarded $50,000 in grants March 25, to 18 groups during an awards ceremony at the Dallas Public Library, including $10,000 to the Dallas School District.
It marked the largest total the DCF has awarded in its 15 years, in part because of need and in part because of a generous gift. "Also, the need was greater than ever before: (the foundation received) about $60,000 in requests in 2009 and over $120,000 this year."
Ottaway said the school-district award will go toward classroom needs and is monitored by an oversight committee.
Most of the recipients are long-standing community support groups and have previously received awards from the foundation.
