Bill Gates Privately Says He Has Backed Harris With $50 Million Donation

For decades, Bill Gates has sat on the sidelines when it came to politicsuntil now.

The Microsoft co-founder has quietly donated $50 million to a "dark money" nonprofit supporting California Attorney General Kamala Harris' presidential run, the New York Times reports.

"This election is different," Gates says in a statement.

"I've been very reluctant to get involved in politics for a number of reasons, but this election is different."

Gates' donation went to Future Forward's nonprofit arm, Future Forward USA Action, which as a 501(c)(4) "dark money" organization does not disclose its donors, according to the people briefed on the matter.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Gates' philanthropic organization, is "significantly concerned about potential cuts to family planning and global health programs if Mr. Gates has talked about his pro-Harris donation with his peers, including Mike Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor and a major supporter of Future Forward who has considered a similarly sized gift, two of the people briefed say.
