Residents of Bel Marin Keys in Marin County, Calif., are getting a taste of what it's like to live in a gated communityand they're not happy about it.
The Marin Independent Journal reports that four candidates are vying for three open seats on the Bel Marin Keys School District board.
The district is located in the heart of Marin County, just south of San Francisco, and the candidates say they want to make sure the community stays that way.
"I want to make sure that the children of Bel Marin Keys have access to a quality education," says one.
"I want to make sure that our schools are safe.
I want to make sure that our roads are safe.
I want to make sure that our parks are safe.
I want to make it as easy as possible for people to get around."
One of the candidates, who works as an insurance claims handler, says she grew up in the community, where her father was a district board president and her mother was a treasurer for the women's club.
She says her professional experience taught her the value of "activist listening" and being a "patient advocate."
Another candidate, who works in retail architecture and design, says he wants to "protect Bel Marin Keys waterways and improve infrastructure."
