When their parents were among the first integrated classes in Baltimore City public schools, Joe and Kaliq Simms were inspired to give back to their community.
Now, the Baltimore couple is doing just that with the creation of the Joseph and Kaliq Simms Charitable Fund, which has so far awarded more than $7 million to organizations including Morgan State University, the Reginald F.
Lewis Museum of African American History and Culture, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, reports the Baltimore Community Foundation.
"We're running our part of the race: trying to create a generational legacy of philanthropy," Joe tells the foundation.
The couple, who met at Morgan State, grew up in the same West Baltimore neighborhood, and both had parents who were among the first integrated classes in Baltimore City public schools, reports the Baltimore Sun.
"They modeled supporting the Black community and the importance of education for that community," says Joe.
"Now, he says, we're running our part of the race: trying to create a generational legacy of philanthropy."
